Upton Jazz In June

This year's International Jazz festival is fast approaching 26th/27th and 28th June 2009 are the dates to add to your diary.

Upton International Jazz Festival will this year be it's 24th annual event and this promises to be the best ever with a new layout on Fish Meadow.

Rather than increase ticket prices the decision has been made to hold the prices at the same amount as last year.

Another new project at this year's event is "Best Of Young Jazz"

If you have been before then we all welcome you back and if you are considering going this year then we will be glad to see you.

Remember at Shipps Garage we are always pleased to help.

Tow bars to be included in the MOT Test

As from the 9th April 2009, Tow bars will be included in the MOT test.

The testing of towbars will include security and condition of the towbar and the fixing points for corrosion.

The MOT test is set to increase again as well on the 9th April 2009.
The MOT Fee is fixed periodically by the Government's executive agency the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency (VOSA), in conjunction with the MOT industry.

Their guideline fees for an MOT test on a car is £53.10 but it has been set to rise to £54.00.

Currently at Shipps Garage we charge £45.00 per test with a free retest, regardless of who carries out the repairs. To qualify for a free retest the vehicle should come back for a retest within 10 working days of the initial MOT test.

Further to this, our MOT testing is carried out independtly to the service and repair side. So if your car fails the test, it is of no monetary value to the repair side of the business.

There are two seperate businesses in one building.

Lets hope for some better weather

Well now we have hopefully seen the last of the bad weather for the time being.

We are now approaching March and usually this is a very busy time for Mot's for most garages. So be sure to book your test in plenty of time give us a call on 01684 592656 we will be happy to see you.

Have you noticed in Upton the huge number of shops closing it is very worrying, lets hope that Upton does not become a ghost town. We still have some very good shops and a couple of very good cafe's as well.

Well now, above everything else we have snow to contend with now.

Here are a few tips to help you deal with this latest snow threat:

1) Don’t drive unless you have to.
2) When driving in snow, keep in a low gear and let your engine and gearbox slow you down.
3) Try to use your brake with care.
4) On slippery surfaces try pulling away in second rather than first gear.
5) Wear comfortable dry shoes.
6) Try to clear all the snow off your car including the roof, it can slip on the windscreen and obscure your view. It can also be a hazard to other road users. You can be fined up to £2500 and get 3 penalty points if the police consider your car a danger to other road users.
7) Don’t let other speeding road users put you off.
8) The AA advise: Carry an ice-scraper, de-icer, food, hot flask, blanket and a warning triangle in the car.

As the weather gets colder it may be a good idea to have your car checked over.

Flooding in Upton

At the moment in Upton, all eyes are yet again on the rising river levels.

In New Street if it floods, then it nearly always comes in the garage and we sometimes have to close, usually we shut, no longer, than two days.

The longest we have ever shut due to flooding was a week that was with the big flood, where it seemed everybody suffered.

Of course it is a major disruption to us and our customers if we do have to shut. We are lucky in a way; most of our customers have been coming to us for years, they are just as used to it as we are.

Being situated where we are, we have to be prepared, so what can we do when it floods?

Well when we had the rolling road for the mot’s put in, we had it installed with extra cable length, it was built into a frame. We also had a tripod and winch made. So as soon as it floods we can have the rolling road out within two minutes.

We also had a frame made up that fits on the two poster car lift. On here we can put anything we like, toolboxes, oil drums, emission tester etc and lift it well out of the way off the flood.

We also have a pump that goes in the bottom of the pit and during the flood it is running all the time, keeping the level of water inside the garage down.
When the flood peak’s in Upton upon Severn, the water level will often drop just as fast as it came up.

Then it is just a matter of sweeping and mopping up.

Opening hours & Mot due date

Our current opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.00 until 5.30
However, there is always somebody at the garage from 8.30 until 6.00

Saturdays we are open usually for Mot’s only from 9.00 until the Mot’s are done.
Bank holidays we are usually shut and of course we have to shut when we get flooded out.

It is always a good idea to get your Mot done in plenty of time, you can in fact Mot your car 30 days before your mot is due. If your car passes, the computer will automatically, update your new test certificate.
So for instance if you Mot runs out on February 25th 2009, then you can have your Mot test on 26th January 2009.

If your car passes, then the computer will issue your new mot, with the expiry date 25th February 2010.

If you drive your car with no current mot, the insurance on your car will become invalid, if you have a bump your insurance company will not help you at all. Also your car will not be legal to drive on the road.

Tips to Save Petrol

1. Check your tyres

Poorly inflated tyres put more strain on your engine and burn more fuel. Check your tyres every week, and make sure they’re inflated to the manufacturer’s requirements, and their tread depth is at least 1.6mm deep.

2. Warming Up

Don’t leave the engine running for five minutes before driving to ‘warm it up’. It’s a big waste of fuel. Drive gently for the first few minutes of your journey instead.

3. Braking

Avoid unnessasary braking.

4. Gears

Try to change gear between 2000rpm and 2500rpm, less strain on the engine.

5. Roof Rack's

When you are not using your roof rack why not remove it.

6. Avoid unnecessary engine use
